Fijian Culture and Traditions

Experience the welcoming Fijian culture and feel at home from the moment you step on the island. Known as the land of smiles, there is a reason why the beauty and warmth of Fiji stays with you long after you leave.

Fijian culture is influenced by an eclectic blend of Fijians who are indigenous, or of Indian, Chinese, and European descent. The official language in Fiji is in fact English, but Fijian is widely spoken and Hindi is commonly used among the Indian population on the islands. The cultural diversity in Fiji is reflected in the diversity of its religion as well. Although the population is mainly Christian, the islands also house mosques, and Sikh and Hindu temples, along with Christian churches.

Historic Villages

Visit some of the local villages and see how Fijian traditions and values stand the test of time. Participate in a local custom by giving the village chief a visiting gift (“sevusevu”), most commonly a plant called “Kava” also known as “Yaqona”. Then take in their simple yet exciting lifestyle as you continue to a Kava drinking ceremony. Historic villages Navala and Viseisei are easily accessible from the Sheraton Fiji Resort.

Traditional Music

The traditional song and dance performance called “Meke” is another highlight of Fijian culture. Telling the stories and legends of Fiji through the power and elegance in the voices and gestures of the talented performers, the Meke dancers deliver an awe-inspiring performance every time.

Cultural Night

The Sheraton Fiji Resort invites you to immerse yourself in Fijian culture with The Westin Denarau Island Resort & Spa’s cultural entertainment night at Coco Palms. Vibrant Fijian cuisine, where dishes are cooked in an underground oven, called “lovo”, will delight your taste buds with every bite. Complete your Fijian cultural night with a kava tasting ceremony and a breathtaking firewalking performance.
